Many adults living with anxiety aren’t just “wired this way”—they’re carrying the echoes of childhood pain. At New Pathways Counseling, we often see how unresolved trauma from early life shows up in anxious thoughts, restless bodies, and difficulty feeling safe—even in calm moments. Most of us are living in a constant fight, flight, or freeze state without even realizing it.
In The Body Keeps the Score, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk explains how trauma physically reshapes the brain. It impacts our stress response, emotional regulation, and memory. One in five Americans was sexually molested as a child, and one in four experienced physical violence at home. These early experiences often leave a lifelong imprint, not just emotionally, but biologically. Our goal at New Pathways is to break the silence and taboo of mental health. Chances are someone sitting next to you at church has experienced a traumatic event. Believers walk through trials and tribulations daily- we as a church must be more open to the idea of seeking help and accountability for these events.
Donna Jackson Nakazawa’s Childhood Disrupted expands on this. She highlights how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—like neglect, abuse, or growing up around addiction—can rewire how our bodies handle stress. Just four or more ACEs can:
This isn’t about blame—it’s about understanding that anxiety is often a body’s way of saying, “I haven’t felt safe in a long time.”
The good news is that trauma isn’t the end of the story. Therapy—especially trauma-informed approaches—helps rewire those anxious pathways. Practices like EMDR, somatic work, and spiritually grounded counseling create space for healing.
If anxiety has been part of your story, you’re not alone—and you’re not stuck. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting what happened, thinking others have it worse, or totally ignoring the problem while it slowly eats at our social lives, workspaces, and home-lives. It means navigating the root cause, understanding and learning coping mechanisms to better handle triggers and symptoms, and coming to terms with the painful parts of our stories.
Want to explore how past experiences may be impacting your anxiety today? Have concerns or questions? No worries! I totally understand how scary the first step towards healing can be. We’re here to walk with you. Let’s take that next step—together.
