When we’ve experienced trauma, it doesn’t just leave memories behind—it can linger in the body, impact our emotions, and even impact our relationship with God and church. At New Pathways Counseling, we recognize healing as a psychological and spiritual journey. This is why we offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy alongside supportive, faith-based counseling.
As a Christian and mental health counselor, I often hear from Christians with various struggles that date back to a past traumatic experience or a challenging childhood. For whatever reason, the taboo of mental health counseling has isolated these individuals into thinking this is “just the way life is.”
The brain is, for whatever reason, the only organ that, when not functioning properly, we fail to seek treatment for. It is almost as if we think medical help applies to every part of our created bodies—except our brain. When we break it down in those terms, it seems quite silly.
The truth is, God has created us to have incredible bodies and minds—both capable of restoration. Through EMDR and supportive counseling, we can begin to process trauma in a way that releases its grip on our daily lives. Our relationship with anxiety, depression, and even our sense of spiritual connection can be renewed. The beautiful reality is that our brains can be rewired to create—you guessed it—new pathways toward healing and hope.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal itself by targeting stuck emotional pain through specific techniques.
When we reflect on the way the Lord designed our brains, it becomes clear how beautifully EMDR aligns with our God-given capacity to renew our minds and rewire harmful thought patterns. (PRAISE!)

While EMDR operates on the psychological and physiological effects of trauma, faith-based counseling provides a safe refuge to depend on biblical teachings during the process of healing. For some Christians, it may be hard to release the pain, anxiety, depression and trauma to God. What we hear a lot in our office is the tremendous guilt and shame for being unable to trust God and move forward from their mental illness.
At New Pathways, we believe that God’s truth brings clarity, hope, and healing. As Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” We honor each client’s personal relationship with God while integrating clinically sound approaches like EMDR to support their healing journey. When someone reprocesses a traumatic experience through EMDR, combining it with faith-based counseling can offer not just relief—but the redemptive hope found in the finished work of Christ.
At New Pathways we are strong believers in EMDR and its effectiveness in treating trauma. We have witnessed believers overcome emotional and spiritual strongholds that hinder their walk with God. Our bodies are created by the Lord to accomplish amazing things. How great that there is a wholistic tool that cooperates with the natural way our brain deals with information to help church members overcome the brokenness they’ve experienced in this world (this gets me so excited).
Healing from trauma doesn’t mean forgetting—it means finding peace, hope, and meaning beyond the pain. If you’re looking for a counseling approach that honors both your emotional needs and your faith, EMDR combined with Christian counseling may be the path God is leading you to explore.
