EMDR is a type of guided psychotherapy that I use to help people heal from traumatic or really distressing experiences, like PTSD. In simple terms, it works by using something called bilateral stimulation — that could be eye movements, sounds, or gentle tapping — to help the brain reprocess memories.
It’s a bit like what happens naturally during REM sleep, when our brain is busy sorting through the day’s events. The aim with EMDR is to reduce the intensity of the emotions tied to painful memories, so they no longer feel as overwhelming. This helps your brain’s natural healing process get back on track, so you can move forward with more ease and peace.

When life feels nonstop, it can be hard to find the space needed for meaningful healing. EMDR Intensives are designed to offer intentional, focused time away from daily demands so you can fully invest in your healing journey. This approach allows for deeper trauma processing in a supportive, one-on-one setting, often leading to clarity and relief in a shorter period of time.
Whether you choose a single extended session or a multi-day intensive, each experience is thoughtfully structured to provide safety, support, and space to process what you’ve been carrying. EMDR Intensives invite you to slow down, reconnect with your inner strength, and move forward with greater peace and resilience.

Sometimes healing calls for intentional space and focused time away from everyday demands. An EMDR Intensive offers a concentrated, one-on-one experience that allows for deeper trauma processing in a shorter period of time. By dedicating focused sessions to your healing, many clients are able to move through long-standing pain more efficiently, gaining emotional relief and clarity sooner than with traditional weekly therapy.
EMDR Intensives support emotional regulation, increased self-awareness, and lasting resilience. As difficult memories are processed, clients often experience a renewed sense of balance, calm, and confidence in daily life. This approach is about prioritizing yourself—creating space to work through what has been holding you back so you can move forward with greater strength, peace, and freedom.
At New Pathways Counseling, we offer EMDR Intensives for the whole family, with a special focus on foster and adoptive families who are carrying complex layers of trauma. This intensive model allows children, parents, and caregivers to engage in focused trauma therapy over a single weekend, helping address a significant portion of the healing work in a shorter, more manageable time frame.
By creating space away from daily demands, families can experience meaningful progress together, reduce emotional overwhelm, and return home with greater stability, understanding, and tools to move forward. Our goal is to support families in healing efficiently, compassionately, and in a way that honors both their time and their story.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps people recover from trauma and distressing life experiences. It works by using bilateral stimulation, often through guided eye movements, to process traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact.
An EMDR Intensive provides extended sessions over a short period, allowing for in-depth processing without the weekly gaps typical in traditional therapy. This can lead to faster breakthroughs and is ideal for individuals looking for focused, concentrated healing.
EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD, complex trauma, anxiety, depression, and distressing memories from a range of situations, such as accidents, abuse, and grief. It is also effective for people who feel ‘stuck’ in their healing journey.
We offer different options, including 4-hour, 8-hour (over two days), and 16-hour (over three days) sessions. Each session type provides a focused amount of time tailored to the client’s needs and healing goals.
EMDR Intensives are available to individuals who are appropriate for trauma-focused care and are ready to engage in extended, focused therapy sessions. Eligibility is determined through a pre-intensive interview to ensure EMDR Intensives are the right fit for your needs and goals. At this time, Intensives may be offered to existing clients or new clients who complete the required intake and screening process.
EMDR Intensives are held at The Bunk House, a private, cozy space designed to support focused healing and rest. Overnight accommodations are available at The Bunk House for an additional charge and can be added to your intensive experience if desired.
The sessions involve structured phases, including history-taking, preparation, and reprocessing of traumatic memories. This approach is designed to help individuals process difficult experiences and gain insight and relief quickly.
We recommend getting plenty of rest before the session and bringing comfortable clothing and any personal items that help you feel at ease. Your therapist will provide a full guide on what to expect and how to prepare in advance.
Many clients report feeling a significant reduction in distress after just one intensive. However, everyone’s healing journey is unique, and some may need additional sessions for deeper issues or complex trauma.
