At New Pathways Counseling, we are excited to begin offering EMDR intensives beginning in May 2026. As more people seek efficient and effective trauma treatment options, many are asking:
What’s the difference between EMDR intensives and traditional weekly therapy sessions?
If you’ve been considering EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy for trauma, attachment wounds, anxiety, or distressing life experiences, an EMDR intensive might be right for you!
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from trauma, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. Developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR is a therapy that helps people process and shut down memories that continue to upset them. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal itself by targeting stuck emotional pain through specific techniques. In essence, EMDR mimics the brain’s natural process of emotional healing, as it does during REM sleep. Check out our blog post to learn more about EMDR here!
When we reflect on the way the Lord designed our brains, it becomes clear how beautifully EMDR aligns with our God-given capacity to renew our minds and rewire harmful thought patterns. (PRAISE!) Do you still have questions about EMDR + a faith-based approach? Check out our blog post on that here!
Whether you’re exploring therapy for yourself or seeking answers for a loved one, this blog series will walk you through what EMDR is, how it works, and why research—and real-life stories—show that it can be truly life-changing.
An EMDR intensive is exactly what it sounds like – intensive, but beautiful! Our intensive format will condense multiple EMDR sessions into a shorter timeframe (1 to 3 days) allowing clients to focus deeply on healing without long gaps between sessions.
Instead of meeting weekly for months, clients engage in several hours of EMDR in one structured block of time. Intensives can be especially helpful for individuals who feel “stuck” in weekly therapy and are ready for a more focused approach. They are ideal for clients who:
Research on trauma-focused intensive treatments has shown promising outcomes. Studies indicate that concentrated trauma therapy can produce significant symptom reduction in shorter periods of time, without compromising effectiveness (Ehlers et al., 2014; van Woudenberg et al., 2018). Intensive trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy has demonstrated large symptom reductions delivered over brief, concentrated timeframes (Ehlers et al., 2014). Lastly, intensive trauma treatment programs have shown high effectiveness and tolerability, even for individuals with complex PTSD (van Woudenberg et al., 2018).
Intensives are not about rushing healing. They are about creating intentional, protected space for it.
At New Pathways Counseling, we carefully assess readiness, stabilization, and support systems before scheduling an intensive. Client safety and emotional well-being always come first. Beginning in May 2026, New Pathways Counseling will begin offering EMDR intensives as part of our commitment to helping individuals, families, and couples experience healing, renewal, and restored hope.
If you’re curious whether an EMDR intensive may be right for you, we want to hear from you to begin the conversation and walk alongside you in making an informed decision for your mental health journey!
