Understanding the difference between everyday stress and anxiety disorders—with faith and wisdom.
We all feel anxious at times. A big presentation, a difficult conversation, or even getting stuck in traffic can cause tension or worry. But what happens when anxiety doesn’t go away—when it lingers, grows, or disrupts daily life? In this blog series my goal is to answer the tough questions. I want to address the awkward uncomfortable feelings and help individuals see- you don’t have to live in these feelings (we can go down a … new pathway!)
Everyday Stress vs. Anxiety Disorders
Stress is usually a response to an external event—a deadline, a change, a challenge. Once the situation passes, the body returns to a calmer state.
Anxiety disorders, however, involve ongoing, excessive worry that doesn’t go away easily. It can affect sleep, focus, relationships, and even physical health. One of my favorite definitions of anxiety is an over estimation of a problem or circumstance and an underestimation of our ability to solve or navigate it.
When anxiety starts to impact daily living we start to see various types of challenges arise. A few of these may be:
If anxiety feels like it’s running your life, it may be more than just stress.
What the Bible Says
Scripture doesn’t shy away from the reality of fear or anxiety. It acknowledges our human vulnerability while also offering deep comfort and truth.
These verses aren’t meant to shame us for feeling anxious. They’re invitations—to turn toward God, not away from Him, when fear arises.
When to Seek Help
“Okay, all of these truths are great, but no matter what I do I can not shake the panic attacks”
“Is something wrong with me?”
“Is daily anxiety normal?”
“Why can everyone else push through these feelings?”
You don’t have to “just pray harder” or “have more faith” to overcome anxiety. Truth be told, there might be a biological or psychological reason our brains are anxious. God has designed our brains, but just like the rest of our bodies they are under the effects of sin. There are neurological conditions, chemical deficiencies, traumatic events, genetics, and a slue of other variables that impact an individual’s relationship with anxiety. God often works through the tools of therapy, support, and community to help navigate the roots of anxiousness in an individual’s life to bring forth knowledge and understanding.
At New Pathways Counseling, we offer compassionate, faith-informed therapy that helps you understand what you’re experiencing and walk a path toward healing. My goal is to help individuals see how their brains were designed by the Creator of the universe, how sin could impact that design causing anxiousness, and lastly to understand there is a way to overcome or manage these symptoms with a professional.
If anxiety is:
- interfering with daily life
- causing physical symptoms
- leading to avoidance or isolation
- rooted in past trauma
…it may be time to talk to someone. And that’s a step of courage—not weakness.
