The Unique Needs of Children in Healing
Children often process emotions and trauma differently than adults, as they are still developing cognitively, emotionally, and socially. When a child experiences trauma—whether from abuse, neglect, loss, or other distressing events—it can significantly impact their development, relationships, and mental health. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy offers a powerful tool for helping children process and heal from these experiences.
In this blog, we’ll explore how EMDR therapy works for children, why it’s effective, and the research that supports its use.
Over the past few blogs, we’ve explored how Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps people process and heal from deep emotional wounds—and how beautifully it aligns with God’s design for renewal and restoration. Did you miss those? No worries, click here for what EMDR is and click here for how it is applied with faith based counseling!
EMDR doesn’t just ease symptoms; it supports true, lasting healing by working with the brain’s natural ability to process pain and move forward. For those seeking a faith-based approach, it can be an especially powerful tool, integrating spiritual truth with emotional transformation. This same truth applies to our kiddos as well!
EMDR helps children process:
2. Understanding Neural networks
When we talk about the brain’s healing through EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), it helps to understand a little about neural networks. Neural networks are the connections in our brain that form from life experiences — every thought, memory, and emotion we have is wired into these networks. All of the good, bad, and ugly that our brain takes in day in and day out (woof)!
In children, however, these networks are still developing. This is where the saying comes in that children are “little sponges.” Because they are younger and have had fewer life experiences, their neural connections are not as deeply ingrained as they are in adults. This means that painful memories, anxious thought patterns, or early depressive feelings may be more accessible within therapy.
3. Young neural networks + EMDR
In EMDR, we work by targeting these specific networks that are causing our children distress— helping the brain process and heal from the “stuck” memories or emotional experiences that can lead to ongoing impacts of daily living. For children, this process can often move more quickly and effectively because their brains are more flexible (what we as therapists sometimes call being “neuroplastic”) and not as heavily burdened by years of reinforced negative patterns.
Research supports that EMDR is not only safe for children but can also be highly effective, helping them build healthier emotional pathways early in life. By addressing trauma or anxiety at a younger age, we support children in growing up with greater resilience, emotional regulation, and hope. We like to say at New Pathways if we aren’t giving your kiddo tools they can use for years to come we aren’t doing our job.
4. Your job as a parent
As powerful and healing as EMDR can be, it’s important for parents to remember that the process can bring up big emotions for children. Reprocessing difficult memories — even in a safe, therapeutic environment — can leave a child feeling vulnerable, tired, or even a little unsettled after a session.
One of the greatest gifts you can offer your child during this journey is grace and patience. After sessions, it’s normal for children to need extra connection, reassurance, and gentle care.
Your role as a parent is not to “fix” what comes up, but to remain present, open, and attuned to what your child is experiencing and learning. Your steady support helps them feel safe to heal and grow.
I totally get the hesitation in trying something new or unheard of, especially when it involves our children’s mental health. This is why at New Pathways we always have a parent meeting before we begin any EMDR session to fully explain the process and answer any questions you may have. We do even have little ones who prefer parents to be in the room with them (this is always welcomed)!
